Other Translations:
Arabian Nights : The Marvels and Wonders of the Thousand and One Nights by Jack Zipes. This was the book which introduced me to the Burton translation. In this book, Zipes presents selected tales from Burton's Nights and replaces some of Burton's archaic prose with more contemporary language. Some of the magic of the Burton translation is lost in the transition, but it still makes a pretty good read. Zipes also recently published a second volume of tales, which I have not read.
The
Arabian Nights by Husain Haddawy. From what I gather (not
being able to read Arabic) this translation is a bit more accurate than
Burton's, and includes most of the tales of volume 1 and the first part
of volume 2 of the Burton translation. Haddawy's introduction is
also worth a read. One thing I didn't like was how Haddawy handles
the marvellous conclusion to the work.
